Free Campfire Nights Quilt Block

Making the 12"x12" or 9"x 9" Camping Themed Quilt Block for #Quiltblockmania

Do you love camping as much as I do? This year, from May-October, we took four camping trips and stayed at a great campground on the Niangua River in Central Missouri. Wouldn't you guess, I was inspired to make something quilty from the experiences! Here is where the Campfire Nights quilt block pattern was birthed. As part of creating a block for Quilt Block Mania, I chose to participate for the month of November since the theme was.....CAMPING! We built several fires on those trips and often build them in our backyard and when visiting my Dad in the woods. Fires are relaxing and we are now into cozy fire season so let me tell you all about this new block.

About the Campfire Nights Quilt Block

The block is made mainly of HST's and easy to make (just pay attention to the placement of your HST's). You have the option of two different sizes- a 9" x 9" (finished) or the 12" x 12" (finished) block. The only different between the two is that the larger size has sashing. You will want to use plenty of starch since you are working with the bias in HST's. The confident beginner pattern also includes a video tutorial for visual learners (all of my patterns include one).

This is my 9.5" x 9.5" (unfinished) block.

The Fabric Choices

I used Art Gallery Fabrics in colors and prints that represented a campfire. I really love that the sky fabrics have little twinkling stars in them and the yellow print seams to flicker! The fabrics are:

  • Sky: Twinkle Twinkle Galaxy from the Lilliput Collection

  • Yellow Flames: Pecan Praline from the Decostitch Collection

  • Orange flames/coals: Apple Cider from the Solids Collection

  • Wood: Dotting Tawny from the Shine On Collection

How to use the Campfire Nights Quilt Block

I made the 9"x 9" (finished) block size into a camp flag for our site this coming spring. I included a long hanging sleeve to the back so it will slide on our little flagpole. I also finished my block with binding. I used (3) 2" strips the width of a fat quarter. As I did an after-action review, I think I should have made the larger size 😉. Oh well, I can always make another. This could make a cute mug rug or sit on a coffee table too (minus the hanging sleeve).

As for the 12" x 12" size (which includes sashing), it would be great to use in a sampler quilt, along with the other camping themed blocks designed by the other Quilt Pattern Designers who participated in Quilt Block Mania for the month of November. They are all super fun!
